While we may not focus on “goals” for our personal Christian spirituality, it might be obvious we would all want to enjoy the ecstasy of the mystic saints, perhaps without the agony of their personal journeys. So mystical union, or a sense of permanent, unshakable peace might represent an ideal “end state”. Not needlessly or selfishly pursuing consolations for their own sake, but genuine, humble and Spirit led meandering.
Unless we put our heart at rest, by introducing some serenity into our lives and relationships it is hard to see how we might make progress on our journey. Being hard of heart is not going to cut it in the long run, and separates ourselves from God. I know I can feel that cut, the step away, when I respond unkindly to something or someone that a more “mellow/peace filled/serene” heart would not have caused hurt or pain.
We all probably know someone who seems to be unfazed by anything. They appear to be so peace-filled and serene, they always come to a better solution to a crisis, even if we had the answer all along and they just prized it out of us with a couple of kind words and questions. This heart-felt responding is of a spirit-filled individual who listens before they respond, and responds with kindness when it is unexpected.
